Do I need a Referral to see an Osteopath?
No, an osteopath is a primary health care practitioner, which doesn’t require a referral from your GP.  Treatments through TAC, Workcover, DVA and medicare may need a referral so please ask when calling to book an appointment.
What do I need to bring?
If you have x-rays or scans relating to your pain, it can be useful to bring those along.  Also bring any concession or private health member cards that you may have.
Is Osteopathy covered under Medicare?
Medicare has a scheme: Chronic Disease Management, that allows patients with chronic pain to get up to 5 treatments a year to allied health professionals (such as Osteopaths).
Is Osteopathy covered under private health insurance?
Osteopathy is covered under your extras/ancillary cover for most health funds.  Rebates will vary from fund to fund, so check with your insurer if you want to know exactly how much.
What happens in a typical osteopathic consultation?
An osteopathic consultation typically begins by sitting down and having a discussion about your pain/concerns, to get an understanding of how your pain affects you and how long its been around.  This is followed by an examination of your body, to identify the key areas which are causing your pain and also any areas of the body which might be contributing to it.  Treatment consists of hands on therapy which can include soft tissue/massage, Stretching, Articulation/manipulation of the joints, cranio-sacral therapy and visceral techniques.  The techniques used are dependent on which will be most effective for your body, and also any personal preference on how you like to be treated.  Exercises to do at home are commonly given to help with the recovery process.
